Plug-In Installing a dishwasher in a kitchen that never had one calls for careful planning. In addition to water, power and drainage, there are design issues to consider such as kitchen traffic patterns and space requirements. To avoid problems down the road, spend some time thinking about your new dishwasher — especially how and where to hook it up. Choose a Location The farther you move a dishwasher from a standard installation, the less convenient it is to use and the more it will cost to install in terms of materials and labor.
That’s why in most respects the ideal place for a dishwasher is on one side or the other of the kitchen sink, within easy access of existing water and drain lines. In fact, those two spots are so desirable you’re usually better off moving or at least shrinking cabinet space to make room for the new appliance.

How to Replace Kitchen Sink Pipes With a Garbage Disposal A garbage disposal can be installed in either a single kitchen sink or on one half of a double sink with a strainer basket in the drain of the second half of the sink. Installing a disposal on a single sink is a much simpler task, as you won’t have to contend with the tie-in for the second sink.
You can install a garbage disposal in a single sink in a couple of hours with some basic hand tools. Then hold a noncontact electrical tester against the wires for the garbage disposal beneath the sink. If the tester light comes on, turn off additional breakers until the tester verifies that the power is off to the circuit. Tuck a rag into the exposed drain line to keep any smells from the drain at bay. Then push up on the coupling, lifting the drain flange out of the bottom of the sink.

Posted in Favorites , Projects 28 Comments When you own an RV one of the things you have to deal with is dumping the waste tanks at the end of your stay in a campground. This is generally not a big deal, you pull up to the dump station, usually located along the driveway on your way out, hook up your waste hose and dump your tanks by opening the 3″ slide valve. But what do you do if you go camping somewhere other than a campground? In my case we often take the RV up to visit my sister and her family in Maine and park in their driveway.

The instructions included with this product are brilliantly clear and make the installation job very easy. The external housing is plastic, which I did not expect it looks metal to me in the pictures.

Just had my dishwasher replaced and the disposer replaced this year as well. The dishwasher air gap device is required out here, I learned how to clean it when installed, they can clog with food particles and will start flooding the top of the sink if clogged. The disposer had a knockout fitting to install the hose from the dishwasher. It is quieter and puts less humidity into the room than running the discharge into the sink, also will not discolor unevenly bleach areas of the sink with chlorinated dishwasher solution.
You really do not want the ripe discharge in the main drain or hose to get back into the dishwasher and get the dishes contaminated or the dishwasher to stink so it is a good idea to install the air gap. I just had an old Waste King disposer rusted through the grinding impeller disk replaced with a Insinkerator Evolution Compact model. Stainless steel grinding components. I was probably going to get the Insinkerator Evolution Excel or Essential, their highest lines, as I need something quite because I have a great room that is one large room with cathedral ceiling that encompasses the living room, dining room and kitchen.
I’m more asking of why it needs to be connected to the dishwasher and what is the benefit of it? I think Ken helped answer part of that by letting us know it helps keep the GD clean, that’s good to know!

While it is true that it is better not to use a garbage disposal if you are on a septic system, the plumbing problems that people have with municipal systems stem from putting the wrong things down them. After a time, the grease will harden and form a solid block that will catch everything else coming along. Also you should not shove stems of vegetables and rinds down your garbage disposal because they will also collect and not grind up so well.
Things that should go down your garbage disposal is leftover meat, potatoes, and other solid foods which all will grind and break up prior to hitting the sewer system. People who have used garbage disposals all of their lives find it hard to imagine living without one, simply because they have become used to it. Most disposal units are very handy when it comes to scraping the unfinished meals off of the plates.
The garbage disposal serves as a handy repository for the uneaten scraps of food that are left on the plates. Even with just scraps, it is advised that a heavy-duty one be in place, just in case you get an errant carrot or two down the disposal.

Around here, a “pigtailed” DW means an appliance guy did it, and wants any future DW replacer to come call an appliance guy to un “hard wire” their appliance. Builder-installed DW just are plugged in to the same under-sink outlet the GD is plugged into. I’ve seen DW “wired” by having a hunk of romex snake out of the DPCV box’s face plate and down to the DW connection the faceplate even using a longer-than-normal screw to hold it on, too.
I’ve seen that under-sink outlet wired, enitre, to the switch in the splash next to the sink, too yep, DW only “on” when the GD is “on”–oops; what’s a “punchlist” again?
