Uses[ edit ] Typically, a fuel tank must allow or provide the following: Provide a method for determining level of fuel in tank, gauging the remaining quantity of fuel in the tank must be measured or evaluated. Venting if over-pressure is not allowed, the fuel vapors must be managed through valves. Feeding of the engine through a pump. Anticipate potentials for damage and provide safe survival potential. Plastic high-density polyethylene HDPE as a fuel tank material of construction, while functionally viable in the short term, has a long term potential to become saturated as fuels such as diesel and gasoline permeate the HDPE material. Considering the inertia and kinetic energy of fuel in a plastic tank being transported by a vehicle, environmental stress cracking is a definite potential. The flammability of fuel makes stress cracking a possible cause of catastrophic failure. Emergencies aside, HDPE plastic is suitable for short term storage of diesel and gasoline. Fuel tank construction[ edit ] Fuel tank for the Apollo Lunar Module , s While most tanks are manufactured, some fuel tanks are still fabricated by metal craftsmen or hand-made in the case of bladder-style tanks.

By Jeff Unwin July All the way along, speedway racers have used mechanically run fuel injection PI pumps the pump was actually belt driven off the front pulley which then pressure fed alcohol to the injectors. The mixture settings were a ‘black art’, changed by the fitting of larger or smaller pills. This system worked really well compared to carburettors for methanol guzzling flat-out racing type applications, but was as subtle as a fart in a lift when it came to daily driver applications.
Volkswagen has used on some models more successfully than others varying Bosch fuel injection systems. The injectors tended to wear relatively quickly and the system began running lean, causing overheating, premature engine wear and burnt valves. I would probably estimate that more than half of the models fitted with this model FI would have been converted to carbies by now. As can be seen there were many and varied systems manufactured mainly by Bosch.
They did have adjustable mixture trims but could not be drastically ‘retuned’ to take into account much larger capacities, long duration cams etc, and that means all the nice hot up work that we VW loonies do to our motors to get them to perform and go! This system uses a very sophisticated programme that is accessed through any IBM compatible or laptop computer. Don’t think for a moment it is a job that you can do with a few mates on Saturday arvo with a case of beer and a few tools.
It definitely is not, but by the same token if you take you time, plan it out and get some correct advice from someone who has fitted one, the job is not very daunting. This is especially so now that PPI has been around for about six or so years and all the ancillary parts are pretty well available off the shelf or can be sourced second hand from a wrecker of late model cars.
The great advantage of PPI is the varying applications that it can be matched to, such as: Multiple throttle body direct port injection, single throttle body direct port injection, single throttle body single injector injection, single throttle body direct port turbo intercooled, multiple throttle body direct port supercharged, single throttle body direct port staged second set of injectors phased in at say 1.

But boy, did they make up for it in Steve, Denny, and Denny Sr. Over the next year, the was replaced by a big ProCharger F3 reverse-mounted supercharger stuck dead-center in front of the KMP Performance-built inch big-block and blowing into a single four-barrel carburetor through a Steve Morris Racing Engines elbow.
Not only would the new setup create less heat than the big Roots, but driver Roth could finally see the road! The cooling system was updated with a vented Be Cool radiator, and they also changed to a Rossler two-speed Pro Mod-style transmission with a Neal Chance inch converter and a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. To save time, Pocratsky just cut the belt off and used a new one at the next track.

The company is pilot testing a fleet of rolling gas stations that will deliver fuel to wherever your car is. The idea is to mod out a tanker truck with pumps, and bring it to convenient spots like restaurants and shopping malls — and perhaps to gasmobile drivers who run out of gas on some lonely road miles from the nearest gas station. So, is this a super smart strategy to sell more gas in a shrinking market, or does it point to a deeper problem in the retail fuel industry?
The retail fuel industry is eating itself. Here in the US, the gas station business has been consolidating since the number of stations peaked in the s. More pumps are clustered in fewer locations, and driver convenience is suffering. Part of the problem can be traced to consumer preference for gas stations with elaborate convenience stores, clean bathrooms, and plenty of room at the pumps. CleanTechnica first took note of the shrinking retail gas trend — and the EV charging counter trend — back in , when the Department of Energy launched a new EV charging initiative aimed at encouraging more workplace charging.
In the trade publication CSP News painted a gloomy picture for retail fuel stations on the national scale: The number of fueling stations including c-stores with fuel, traditional gas stations with kiosk-style stores or two-bay autocare facilities, hypermarkets, etc. By c-stores they mean convenience stores, btw.
Does it require more or less effort to push a loaded wheelbarrow over hard level ground than to turn around and pull it? What about when the ground is soft? Surely the clear lens would let the light through rather than casting a shadow?

By Clifton Klaverweiden February 15, Building a racing fuel system for a naturally aspirated engine — in the sub second range in the quarter-mile on nothing but good old natural atmosphere — can be a challenge. That makes fueling a critical part of the equation. Recently with one of our race projects, we knew we would a need stout fuel pump and a reliable pressure regulator, along with some big lines and precision fittings to tie the fuel system together.
To further cut down on weight, we went with a small 1. For safety, we installed a roll-over tube on top of the fuel cell. If the car should flip, the roll-over tube creates a low pressure area to keep the fuel from spilling out of the tank. You can also see where we made our hole in the trunk floor to run the fuel line to engine bay.
Rated at horsepower at 25 PSI in naturally aspirated applications running pump gas, the QuickStar is a perfect match to help us meet our lofty 9-second goals. Of course there are several steps higher in the MagnaFuel performance ladder that we could have gone, but the QuickStar will still leave us a bit of room to grow if we need it. Here’s the QuickStar mounted in the trunk.
The silver canister on the suction side of the assembly is the built-in pre-filter. The black line running straight up is the fuel return line, which makes installation much easier since we don’t have to run two lines the full length of the car. A cool feature is that the fuel pressure the pump produces can be adjusted from 25 to 36 PSI to help with fine tuning.

As many of you know our team has a history of unique fueling techniques, but let me say that although we always attempt to have the fastest fuel stops in the dez, safety is the top priority. As Matt stated, getting flow rates of 10 gallons per second is very do able, and at those flow rates, you can have a very serious problem in a very short period of time. It is yet to happen, but I think that eventually there will be a major incident during re-fueling at a dez race.
I would like to say a few things about operating dry brake systems in the dez; First off, the dead man valve at the tank is absolutely essential. Secondly, having the fueler wearing fire protective clothing is something that should not be overlooked. A closed faced helmet, flame resistant gloves, along with carbon-x balaclava and undergarments should be worn at minimum. NEVER set the dry brake on the ground in the dirt! Choose your fuel team and have them practice, practice, practice.
Note that the Greer Racing team has 4 people on the fuel system. One on the deadman, two holding the hose, and one making the stab.

If you want to make power on a multi-cylinder engine you have to use a collector system. Whether it’s a V-Twin or a V-8 it’s the same, and no less an authority than the famed engine builder Smokey Yunick will tell you that. Not using free exhaust energy to help your engine breathe is downright criminal. No matter what the conventional wisdom is, staggered duals on a Harley will not make more power.
You simply cannot escape the fact that a properly designed will give you more useable torque where you need it, in the to rpm range, which means less downshifts and less rpm to get the job done.

Fuel Cell Hook Up Question!!!
The S has a lot of things going for it. Light weight, plenty of room under the hood and almost unlimited parts availability make the S a real contender on the quarter-mile. The only real problem with the S is its truck-inherent weight distribution. The back of the truck is extremely light, which makes for poor traction and requires some special consideration in engineering. Building the Truck 1 Move the front axle forward as far as possible on the chassis.
Lengthening the wheelbase in this way will effectively move the engine and transmission closer to the rear axle, helping to achieve that ideal front-rear weight distribution.

Bloom Energy Debuts SOFC Fuel Cell System for Distributed Generation
During hard cornering, acceleration, stopping, inclines, and low fuel conditions fuel runs away from the fuel pick up which introduces air into the system resulting in poor engine performance and even stalling. As an area of the Hydramat is uncovered, the tiny pores of the media seal off thru surface tension, forcing fuel to be contained in the reservoir and drawn from other areas of the mat where fuel continues to be available. The sheer size and coverage area of the HydraMat allows it to pull fuel from virtually any area in the tank or cell eliminating the need for specialty reservoirs and pick up pumps saving cost and greatly reducing complexity.
